Fred Marsalis Jr. is our April 2026 Champion of the Month

Miss-Lou Champions Spotlight is proud to recognize Fred Marsalis Jr. as our April 2026 Champion of the Month, honoring a man whose roots run deep in the Miss-Lou and whose passion for people has grown into something that is genuinely changing this community.

Fred Marsalis Jr. was born and raised in Vidalia, Louisiana, and now calls Natchez home. He is a graduate of Alcorn State University, where he walked on to the football program and earned his spot on the roster out of pure determination. Of the 23 walk-ons that year, only he and one other player made the team. After college he planted his flag in the Miss-Lou for good, building a life here with his wife Betty and their two daughters.

In 2014, Fred discovered CrossFit training and never looked back. The competitive drive it rekindled in him, combined with his natural ability to connect with people and push them toward their best, led to him launching MDP Fitness. The name says it all: mediocrity doesn't pay. MDP Fitness has now been a cornerstone of the Natchez community for nearly a decade, offering training for all levels, nutritional coaching, and a welcoming environment where the only thing that matters when you walk through the door is your goal. As Fred has said, it does not matter where you are from, what color you are, what your religion is, or who you voted for. If you come in with a goal in mind, that is all that matters.

But Fred's vision did not stop at the walls of his gym. During the COVID pandemic, while everyone was isolated and going stir crazy, Fred started gathering with a few mentors and close friends at the Natchez Manor, six feet apart, with a cigar and good conversation. It was in those moments that something clicked for him. He realized it was time to start manifesting a bigger idea, one that could take the unity he felt in those small gatherings and bring it to the entire community.

That idea became MDP Reach.

MDP Reach is a nonprofit organization founded by Fred with a mission to educate people from all walks of life about the importance of overall health and wellness through fitness and nutritional guidance, while also advocating for the critical role of mental health. The organization also works to create specialized fitness programs for special needs adolescents, ensuring that every member of the community has access to the benefits of healthy living.

At the heart of MDP Reach is a belief Fred has stated plainly and powerfully: the Miss-Lou is still separated more than it should be. He built MDP Reach to tackle the social dynamics that keep this community divided, and to create spaces where people who would not normally mingle can come together for a common cause. As Fred has put it, if you have good music, good people, good food, and good ideas, it does not matter if you are Black, white, Puerto Rican, or Asian. We can do something great together.

Before the first MDP Reach Weekend ever happened, Fred took his vision before the Natchez Board of Aldermen to get their support. I was there with him that day. He walked in and laid out his plan, and the room responded unanimously. Watching Fred command that room with nothing but a genuine idea and the heart to back it up, I knew right then that this was going to be something real. And it has been.

The flagship event of MDP Reach is the annual MDP Reach Weekend, now in its third year. The weekend brings together fitness competitions, health screenings, mental health programming, and the centerpiece of it all, the MDP Reach Scholarship Gala. It is an elegant evening of community celebration that raises funds for scholarships awarded to high school seniors across the Miss-Lou.

The weekend also features the Sunday Funday on the Natchez Bluff, a family-friendly gathering with live music, food vendors, health and wellness resources, and activities for all ages. It has grown into one of the most inclusive and anticipated events in the area, drawing support from many sponsors, as well as the personal endorsement of both Natchez Mayor Dan Gibson and Vidalia Mayor Buz Craft. Mayor Gibson has said that the MDP Reach Gala was one of the most inclusive and most fun events he has ever attended during his tenure.

Fred also serves on the Natchez Convention and Promotion Commission through Visit Natchez and the Tourism Council. He has been consistent in his belief that true economic growth for this region depends on diversity and inclusion, and that the kind of community businesses want to invest in is one where all of its people are visibly working together.

I have known Fred Marsalis for years, and I can tell you his commitment is as genuine as it gets. When I was building the Brightest Stars Ball, Fred was one of the original Board Members who stepped up to help me get it off the ground. He has shared many times what that event means to him. He once told me that for those three or four hours, the way those kids respond to us and the way we respond to them, if we just treated each other like that every day, we would not have any issues in the world. That is the spirit behind everything Fred does. He is not chasing a trend. He is building something, patiently and purposefully, because he genuinely believes in what this community can become.

Fred Marsalis Jr. is a husband, a father, a fitness professional, a community builder, and a scholarship provider. He is a man who chose to stay in the Miss-Lou, to invest in it, and to bet on what it can become. His theme for MDP Reach, a community reimagined, is not just a slogan. It is the work he shows up to do every single day.

For his unwavering commitment to health, unity, education, and the people of the Miss-Lou, we are proud to recognize Fred Marsalis Jr. as the Miss-Lou Champions Spotlight Champion of the Month for April 2026.
