Torrence Sheppard is our March 2026 Champion of the Month

Miss-Lou Champions Spotlight is proud to recognize Torrence Sheppard as our March 2026 Champion of the Month, honoring a man whose life has been defined by service, leadership, and a deep commitment to helping others.

A graduate of Natchez High School’s Class of 1998, Sheppard chose a path that would lead him into a life of service to his country. He spent 26 years in the United States Army, dedicating his career to protecting others and strengthening the soldiers around him. His military journey culminated with his retirement at the respected rank of Sergeant First Class, a role that reflects both experience and the trust placed in him as a leader.

During his time in the Army, Sheppard carried several important responsibilities that focused on the well being and development of fellow soldiers. He served as an Equal Opportunity NCO, a Master Resilience Trainer, and a Sexual Harassment NCO, positions that required integrity, leadership, and a strong commitment to creating a healthy and respectful environment within the ranks.

His service also took him overseas, including deployments to Kuwait and Belize, where he contributed to the Army’s mission while representing the strength and professionalism of American service members.

His character is also reflected in the personal ways he supports others during difficult

times. During one of his deployments to Kuwait, Torrence showed incredible kindness to my family when my great nephew, Watson Calhoun, was battling cancer. He sent Watson a special care package from Kuwait and even ran a 5K at Camp Arefjan on September 11, dedicating the run to Watson in honor of his strength. Throughout that time, Torrence regularly checked in with me through messages to see how Watson and our family were doing. One day he told me he was arranging to have the American flag flown over his command center in Watson’s honor. After returning home, he personally delivered that flag, along with an official certificate, to Watson’s parents. It was an incredibly meaningful gesture that our family will never forget.

On February 28, 2026, family, friends, and supporters gathered to celebrate Sheppard’s retirement from the United States Army after 26 years of faithful and dedicated service. The evening marked the closing of an extraordinary chapter of military leadership and sacrifice, while also celebrating the impact he has made on countless lives throughout his career.

Even after retiring from active duty, Sheppard continues to invest in the next generation. In civilian life, he serves as a Cadre Trainer for the Louisiana National Guard Youth Challenge Program in Carville, Louisiana. The program works with young people who need guidance, structure, and encouragement, helping them build discipline, confidence, and a path toward a productive future. It is fitting that someone with Sheppard’s leadership background now plays a role in shaping and mentoring young lives.

Outside of his professional work, Sheppard is also a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated, an organization known for its commitment to brotherhood, scholarship, and service within communities.

At the center of everything he does is his family. He is married to Walisha Sheppard, and together they are the proud parents of Ladaysha, Jada, Idellia, and Jerome. Through both his military career and his continued work mentoring youth, Sheppard has demonstrated the same values that guide his life at home: dedication, responsibility, and a desire to make a difference.

After more than two decades of service to his country and continued leadership in his community, Torrence Sheppard represents the very definition of a champion. His story reminds us that true leadership is not only about rank or title, but about how you impact the people around you.

For his years of military service, his commitment to mentoring young people, and the example he sets for others, we are proud to recognize Torrence Sheppard as the Miss-Lou Champions Spotlight Champion of the Month for March 2026.
